A few months ago, I asked Maya Pedal in Guatemala for photos of their pedal-powered machines. In response, volunteer Sarah Claudette organized a photo shoot with the help of local children, and now the kids are excited about seeing themselves in print. “Books are scarce here,” Sarah wrote. “There are no public libraries and very, very few bookstores in Guatemala. Importing books is extremely expensive, and schools here often don’t have books for the children to read.”
So I’m looking for Spanish-language kids’ books. I’m also looking for someone traveling to Guatemala who’d like to bring a suitcase full of books to children eager to read. Children’s author Margriet Ruurs, who runs the brilliant program Bookmatchmaker, is helping us find sponsors. If you’d like to help with this project, too, please send me an email and join us!
